West Roxbury is a neighborhood of Boston.  It is bordered by Roslindale to the northeast, Hyde Park to the southeast, the town of Brookline to the north, the city of Newton to the northwest and the town of Dedham to the southwest. West Roxbury is separated from Roxbury by Jamaica Plain and Roslindale.

West Roxbury, not to be confused with Roxbury, was founded in 1630.  In the beginning it was mainly used as farmland. Today, you will find mostly single-family homes, a few multi-family and some apartments.  Centre Street is the neighborhood’s commercial area.  Among other things, will find restaurants, diners, pharmacies, gas stations, a substantial grocery store, coffee shops, banks and a fire and police station.

The Needham line of the MBTA Commuter Rail has three stations in West Roxbury (Bellevue, Highland and West Roxbury). Several MBTA bus lines service West Roxbury.

West Roxbury is in the Boston Public Schools District. There are also a few private schools.

West Roxbury is home to several places of worship, including Catholic parishes, churches of various Protestant denominations, and a Jewish synagogue.

In 1841, Nathaniel Hawthorne was a founding member of a transcendentialism utopian community that was established at Brook Farm in West Roxbury. That experiment in communal living eventually failed but perhaps you will find your utopia in West Roxbury.  We can help you decide.
